Bible Study 1 John 2:12-14

(1 John 2:12-14 ESV)

I am writing to you, little children,

because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake.

I am writing to you, fathers,

because you know him who is from the beginning.

I am writing to you, young men,

because you have overcome the evil one.

I write to you, children,

because you know the Father.

I write to you, fathers,

because you know him who is from the beginning.

I write to you, young men,

because you are strong,

and the word of God abides in you,

and you have overcome the evil one."

As we look at these scriptures we see some AMAZING truths that should blow our minds and stand in Awe of our Triune King!

Verse 12 "I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven for his name's sake."

When we stand before our Lord on judgement day (And everybody will) we will be judged on whether we have repented of our sin and trusted in Christ alone. When we trust in Christ alone then when God looks at us He will see the work of Christ on the cross applied to our account.

This of course cost Jesus his life. Lets look at Philippians:

(Philippians 2:5-11 ESV)

"Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

This should remind us that salvation is not about us! When giving the gospel we should not be telling people to come to Christ because it will give them a better life, or make them happy, etc.
We come to Christ to flee God's wrath. The reason God saved an elect people was to give his Son a love gift (The Church is the bride of Christ) that will glorify and worship Him for eternity.

Lets look at verses 12-14

We are told that we have overcome the Evil one.  We are told that we have overcome the evil one because the word of God abides in us. What an awesome and amazing truth this is!  It is because of the shed blood of Christ on the cross which has broken the chains of sin and death. We talked earlier how Christ is our intercessor  and 1 Corinthians 6 talks about how we are the temple of the Holy Spirit.

In 1 john 4:4 we are told "Greater is He that is in you then he that is in the world"

We have God's Holy Spirit abiding in us and we should be saturated in the word of God which is the sword of the Spirit (Ephesians 6).

Meditate on these precious truths friends and how awesome it is that we are saved for HIS name sake!
